2024 Scholarship Award Winners
This year, because of the chapter’s continued generosity, we could offer six scholarships of $2,000 each. We had 10 students apply for the scholarships. Congratulations to the winners! Three of them were able to attend our 2Q luncheon and tell us a little more about themselves, it was a real treat meeting them, hearing what inspires them, and how their personal experiences really drove their interests.
We are continuing handling the scholarship ourselves, saving on consulting fees. The process is working great, and we plan to keep it this way. Since 2005, we have given out over $144,000 in scholarships to 89 recipients.
Luke Brightbill
Luke graduated from Acalanes HS in Lafayette in May, 2023. His goal is to graduate from Chapman University in the spring of 2027 with a BS in Health Sciences. He then plans to attend graduate school for a Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies, with a focus on the mental health of adolescents. Luke is drawn to this career because of his strong interest in medicine and helping others. This career offers versatility and the opportunity to work in various healthcare settings, from physician's offices and hospitals to outpatient clinics. This flexibility will allow him to adapt to different environments and meet diverse patient needs. Most importantly, he is passionate about making a positive impact on young people's lives by addressing their mental health challenges and supporting their overall well-being.
Jordan Go
Jordan graduated from El Cerrito HS in June. Jordan is an incoming freshman at UC Berkeley majoring in Business and the very first freshman cohort of their new program. He has a passion for service and basketball! In 2022 he became an Eagle Scout from Berkeley’s troop 24. In college he is hoping to continue serving the community and finding a club related to business or entrepreneurship. After college he hopes to run his own business – his leadership skills obtained through Scouting should help with that!
Amelia Hoyle
Amelia graduated from San Ramon Valley HS in May, 2022. She is entering her third year as a Biological Anthropology major and Spanish minor at UCLA, hoping to pursue a career in medicine as a physician and research specialist. Through the interdisciplinary curriculum of Biological Anthropology, Amelia hopes to graduate not only equipped with the material to continue to medical school, but also with a developed perspective to understand, appreciate, and learn from humans of all different cultures and upbringings. A key feature of inadequate healthcare comes from the language barrier experienced by many minority groups, and through both her degree in anthropology - the study of humans - and her minor in Spanish language and culture, she hopes to bridge this gap with as many patients as possible focusing on treatments that reflect and respect a variety of cultural customs. She is especially interested in understanding the relationship between the gut microbiome and the brain, and how this may contribute to the development and symptom presentation of Autism Spectrum Disorder. In her free time, she thoroughly enjoys camping, biking, running, painting, and traveling with her friends and family!
Kristen Jang
Kristen graduated from Washington High School, Fremont, in June. She started gymnastics over 12 years ago and has done it competitively for 10 years, traveling to meets out of state while practicing 20 hours a week. When she wasn’t at the gym, Kristen volunteered at church activities and with other nonprofits. She enjoys spending time with family and friends in her free time. She is looking forward to attending CSU Fullerton this fall, majoring in Accounting.
Sarah McClelland
Sarah graduated in June from Bullard HS, Fresno, as summa cum laude valedictorian and will attend UC Irvine to study aerospace engineering in the fall. Sarah plans to pursue a job in the space industry, with her ultimate goal being to become an astronaut. Over the summer, Sarah is wrapping up the final parts of her private pilot's license and filling her time studying in preparation. She completed her first solo flight in September 2023. Her current interest after college is in potential locations of extraterrestrial life and researching environments on Earth from space.
Lily Woodhead
Lily graduated from Las Lomas HS in May. Her passion for language and social sciences and the impact of government on communities has led Lily to pursue a degree in Political Science at the University of Washington. Based on Lily’s high school experience running Cross Country and captaining the Girls Lacrosse team, she sees herself with a career in business, where team building and the opportunity to continue to learn and grow are possible. She enjoys the rewards that hard work brings and looks forward to working in an office at a seasonal community center and day camp in Canada this summer. Through her trips to Canada she has seen how the different governments operate and inspires her to look at them in a more analytical way. She will likely study abroad at some point to gain a well-rounded perspective on humanity.
